Entrance to the Oskarstollen (Oskar gallery) in valley of the Hohnbach (or Lontzenbach) between Lontzen and Kelmis. It was part of the Schmalgraf mine. The ore of lead and zinc (calamine) was mined here between 1867 and 1932 and transported for smelting over rails to Kelmis. This gallery was built both to drain the mine and to dispose of the ore. par 19Arnold45 (CC BY-SA 3.0)

Since 2003, the 52 ha which constitute this forest, surrounded by pastures, belong to the heritage of the Walloon Region. The biodiversity of this wood is remarkable (Remarkable species around the lake Casino and in the state forest Hohnbachtal).
The landscape was shaped by the Hohn and in the nearest past (1862-1931) by the human footprint, i. e. extraction of calamine (zinc ore). This activity has left many relics, including two galleries (Oskar Gallery and Auenberg Gallery), a former railway of 2400 meters and a halde (mining debris stockpile). par 19Arnold45 (CC BY-SA 3.0)

The State forest Hohnbachtal is located in immediate vicinity of Kelmis, that has been known since Roman times for its zinc mining. It has thereby an important function as recreation area, along with the adjoining Casinoweiher, where the ore washing of the Vieille Montagne S.A. was located. Now this is a valuable piece of nature too, with a high recreational value for the inhabitants of Kelmis. par 19Arnold45 (CC BY-SA 3.0)

Among other plants the wild narcissus (Narcissus pseudonarcissus) flourishes in the state forest Hohnbachtal at the time around Easter. They are rare but to be found here in a large number. Of course it is strictly forbidden to pick them or to dig them up! It is the wild ancestor of the narcissi in our gardens. par 19Arnold45 (CC BY-SA 3.0)

There are several sinkholes in the higher parts of the state forest Hohnbachtal near Kelmis which are signs of underground karst phenomena. These take place in the hard but slightly soluble limestone. In this region it is called Blaustein (blue stone). par 19Arnold45 (CC BY-SA 3.0)
