Unveiling of memorial, Messines, Belgium, after World War I. This is one of two photographs of Field Marshal (Earl) Haig (1861-1928) at the unveiling of the memorial of the London Scottish Regiment at Messines, Belgium. It shows Haig, perhaps surprisingly, reading his welcome to the Belgian king, Albert I (1875-1934). Onlookers and a press photographer stand in the background.The London Scottish Regiment was the first Territorial regiment in action against the Germans on 31 October 1914 at the Battle of Messines.
